Answering FAQs on Window Submissions
Wednesday, August 06, 2014
Although window submissions aren't due until January, we have been receiving a number of questions regarding the window submission guidelines. In this post, we answer all of your most frequently asked questions on the window space.How/When/Where are the windows viewed?

The windows are viewable ONLY from the street. Your installation will not be accessible to viewers within the actual gallery space. The gallery closes at 6pm, but the windows stay lit until 10pm, meaning your piece should be able to function both during the day and night.
What are the measurements and technical specifications of the window space?

For a diagram of the window specs, please click here.
The back wall has space for 34 fluorescent tube lights, each 45” long, which would be provided for use should they be required. Artists are not required to use these lights, and can opt to use all, some, or none of them. It should be noted, however, that if opted not to use these lights, the artist would be required to provide their own lighting to make the piece visible day and night.
There is one simple electrical outlet at the rear of the space, adjacent to the west window. It is hidden by storage items (which can be moved) in these images.

Each window has a sill, and each sill is roughly 12 inches deep. The flat base of the sill is 8.5 inches deep, with a lip at either end. There is a 35 ½ inch distance between the sill and the back wall (where the fluorescent tubing is attached). We use this space as storage on a case-by-case basis, but we can clear out the area if the window installation requires more space.
Can I hang objects from the ceiling?

Yes. You CAN drill into the ceiling, walls, and sills. However, there is HVAC piping on the ceiling, as well as fluorescent tubing/accompanying electrical fixtures that may be obstructive (see images above).
What alterations to the windows are allowed?
You can attach vinyl/make markings to the interior side of the window. You can also attach vinyl/make markings to the exterior of the window as long as it is limited to the window glass area. However, you CANNOT alter the exterior of the building due to its landmark status.
As a general requirement, all windows must be able to return to their original state during de-installation (i.e no scratching of the glass, permanent stain, etc.).
What will increase the chances of my proposal being accepted?
We are looking for proposals that are simultaneously site-specific and conceptually coherent with the artist’s regular studio practice. The window proposal should not be a one-off project. The more specifically your proposal pertains to our windows in an engaging and plausible way, the more likely it will be accepted. We also enjoy proposals that have mixed media.
Will I get paid for any expenses?
If accepted, the artist will be given a $500.00 honorarium.
Can I visit to see the window space in person?
If you want to see the window space prior to submitting your proposal, send an email to nati[at]mixedgreens[dot]com to set-up an appointment.

Meghan LeBorious in the windows
Monday, January 23, 2012

If you've walked down 26th street at all recently, you've probably noticed the flickering Mixed Greens' windows. The celestial-looking installation, Emptiness & Its Implications, is by Meghan LeBorious. Upon closer inspection you'll recognize that the Swarovski-crystalized cutouts are representative of a sparkling circulatory system, and not a star filled galaxy.

And of course, feel free to stop in to check out End Of Days, on view through February 11th.

Final touches on Mikhail Iliatov's installation
Thursday, March 24, 2011

Our intern Jessie, above, helps put the finishing touches on Mikhail Iliatov's Rembrandt Flyby (Parts 1 & 2). Tiny sensors are hidden throughout the gallery and will be tabulating how long gallery visitors stand in front of the artwork on view.

Rob is working to hide the last of the wires from the tech savvy project. The final tabulations will be visible on digital counters in the windows of Mixed Greens (viewable from 26th Street).
More on Mikhail's project, from the press release:
Rembrandt Flyby (parts 1 & 2), uses sensors and hardware, stealthily installed throughout Stas Orlovski’s solo exhibition
(part 1) and Sonya Blesofsky’s solo exhibition (part 2), to tabulate how many people stand in front of each piece and for how long. The number of people and the average viewing duration for each artwork displays in the Mixed Greens’ windows as a series of flickering numbers. While the numbers may appear to reference something tangible, they are truly attempting to quantify the intangible: appreciation, contemplation, and meditation occurring in front of a work of art. Is anyone willing to spend thirty minutes standing in front of speakers, or a work or art, or the gallery windows? Iliatov is attempting to find out.
SHOUT OUT to Boing Boing for spreading the word!

Thanksgiving Roundup
Monday, November 29, 2010

I spent a lovely Thanksgiving holiday this past week in Los Angeles where I had the opportunity to visit Stas Orlovski's studio (above). Orlovski's upcoming exhibition of new work opens on March 24, 2011 at Mixed Greens.

Just before I left for the holiday, Mixed Greens celebrated the opening of Alexander Reyna's window installation LoveHateNow. Above: Heather, Zander and Steven check out the multimedia windows from street level on a freezing day.

Here's a closer look at the Duratrans and video-projection. It's best viewed from street level between the hours of 3-6pm (when it's darker outside).
