Ugly Renaissance Babies and other non-news this Tuesday
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Art Fag City pointed me in the direction of my new favorite Tumblr, Ugly Renaissance Babies. Couldn't wait till Friday Fun Day to post it.Jerry dislikes Damien, but still loves NY.
The New Museum entry fee has gone up (even though it sounds like it was lowered).
A little birdie said that D'Amelio Terras is separating into D'Amelio and Terras. I'm sure we'll learn more about this in the coming days.

New Mayan artifacts were unearthed this week...reminded me that you have only 2 weeks left to check out "End of Days" at Mixed Greens! Those Mayans and their predictions...
Lots of news today, including Moss closing, and Lou Reed's failed music (err, I mean "art").
Jean Paul Gaultier's Winehouse obsession.
The VIP fair's countdown clock has begun!

ART FOR HEALTHCARE
Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Hi, I’m Becca! I’m the new intern! So here we go.
Artists in the Bronx can now swap their creative skills for hospital medical care.
This is similar to the Artist Access program created at the Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn in 2005.
Both programs allow artists to utilize their creative nature in return for healthcare. Which is really cool.

to Curate
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Curate:to take care of. to preserve. to maintain.
The term is getting out of control. You do not curate a closet, a playlist, or gourmet sandwich toppings. Those are instances in which choice, style, and editing might be more on par with what is going on. I might go so far as to suggest that a group show is organized, while a collection is curated.
thoughts for today.

Meghan LeBorious in the windows
Monday, January 23, 2012
If you've walked down 26th street at all recently, you've probably noticed the flickering Mixed Greens' windows. The celestial-looking installation, Emptiness & Its Implications, is by Meghan LeBorious. Upon closer inspection you'll recognize that the Swarovski-crystalized cutouts are representative of a sparkling circulatory system, and not a star filled galaxy.
And of course, feel free to stop in to check out End Of Days, on view through February 11th.

Friday Fun Day: Spot Challenge Champ and more on my RIDICULIST
Friday, January 20, 2012
Damien Hirst is patting himself on the back pretty mightily right about now. Some poor fool, errr, collector, actually completed THE SPOT CHALLENGE. He must have really wanted that free print...The Louvre is buying a rare Pieta from a junk dealer.
Bored with Bottino? Subway sandwiches aren't your thing? Randwich might be the answer to your prayers. Now, if only west Chelsea can get its own outpost of Williamsburg fave Raddish. There's a shocking lack of kale in this zip code.

shout out!
Friday, January 13, 2012
Hey interwebs, today we're SHOUTING OUT to our readers. This is a reminder that if you mention The Pit, or mention to us that you read the blog, we'll return the favor by SHOUTING OUT to you.
SHOUT OUT to Rachel Hegburg! Thanks for reading the blog. Glad you liked the post about Damien Hirst's Spot Challenge.
SHOUT OUT to Mark Mulroney for being an avid reader of The Pit. And, per your request, I'll try to include more shark news in these cold, winter months. There's nothing better than shark news to lift one's spirit out of the winter doldrums.
To satisfy the need for more shark references, and to certify that Damien Hirst is a tool, I'd like to propose the following Friday Fun Day theme:
Thank you, Hennessy Youngman, for making my week.

Buying a 3-continent OneWorldAlliance plane ticket to visit all of the Gagosian's in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Athens, Rome, Geneva, Paris, and London: $3,700.New luggage for the momentous journey: $500.
Number of spot paintings you're likely to experience: 300.
