Mixed Greens is thrilled to present Los Angeles-based artist Stas Orlovski’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. He will debut a series of large-scale canvases that collage drawing, painting and printmaking techniques to reclaim and reinterpret nostalgic and sentimental imagery.

In each of his nocturnes, Orlovski embraces images found in mid-Century Russian children’s books, Japanese woodcuts, Victorian illustrations and Dutch botanical drawings. Inspired and challenged by such overt sentimentality, he constructs decayed gardens where Modernist forms share space with figurative fragments and bird songs echo in the dark. Everything sits tranquil under a faded night sky and an oversized moon.

Orlovski’s references—broken statuary, overgrown vegetation, rainstorms, clouds, pools, mountains and songbirds—play on the romantic and maudlin to evoke familiar feelings of memory, loss and nostalgia. The result is a series of poetic and haunting works that invite the viewer into a place both familiar and innocent, a place dreamed about and remembered.

Stas Orlovski (b. 1969 Kishinev, Moldova) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA and was a 2008 recipient of a prestigious COLA (City of Los Angeles) artist fellowship and exhibition. He has exhibited in solo exhibitions at Nathan Larramendy Gallery in Ojai, CA, Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago, IL and Traywick Gallery in Berkeley, CA. His numerous group exhibitions span the country. Orlovski was honored with the J. Paul Getty Trust Fellowship in 2005 and the George Rickey Fellowship to Yaddo in 2004. Public Collections include The Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Phoenix Art Museum.
